| Our nationally recognized safety program includes a comprehensive safety
manual, ongoing training, regular and unannounced safety inspections,
and mandatory drug testing. Onsite safety incentives motivate everyone
to remain safety conscious always. These factors together help to explain
why our loss incident rate is well below the national average.
Safety Policy Statement John Deklewa & Sons, Inc. believes that a thorough safety policy in effect on the jobsite is an integral part of the construction operation. We recognize our employees as our most important asset and consider their safety a very real obligation. In addition, a well-managed Safety Program reduces lost time due to accidents and improves employees’ attitudes toward performing their duties, contributing to the cost efficiency of the project. In order to maintain a safe work environment, company management, all employees and subcontractors must be committed to performing their duties in a safe manner. In all cases, OSHA regulations and other applicable standards are to be observed and maintained as a minimum standard. Safety and Loss Prevention The following activities in place at John Deklewa & Sons, Inc. were designed to protect our workers, reduce workers’ compensation costs, and reduce the frequency of claims. The best way to reduce workers’ compensation costs is to prevent accidents. This is best illustrated through these elements of our program: |

Our principals take an active role in all facets of the safety program. This leadership is readily apparent through activities at all levels of the organization. Our Management Team strives to provide a safe workplace by providing safe equipment and proper training, and implementing safe methods and procedures. Through our safety incentive program, employees are encouraged to participate in safety and loss prevention efforts. We take advantage of their working knowledge in order to help decide on safety and loss-prevention improvements. Our Safety Committee, which represents all operational activities, meets on a monthly basis to facilitate safety improvements. To further educate employees and maintain safety awareness, we conduct weekly “Tool Box Talks” on all projects. Weekly sign-off sheets ensure all topics are communicated to all employees. We strive to continually improve operations. Our Safety Committee serves as the primary tool for communicating and implementing safety improvements. This is supplemented by workplace analysis, audits and observations, with other avenues pursued as needed. We communicate cost drivers and accidents to employees at organizational, production and safety-related meetings. In addition, both near misses and accidents are reviewed for correction at monthly safety meetings. Our safety activities are tailored to identify both physical and behavioral hazards. We then ensure the appropriate controls are identified (through committee activities, tool box talks, safety observations, etc.) and implemented. Because safety knowledge is required before safe behavior can be expected, we train all our employees in safety and expect their actions to always favor safety. Many resources are devoted to training, including our long-standing intensive training program, which was developed to address workplace hazards as well as regulatory requirements. |
